TWA designed and delivered the conversion of a former hangar into Silo, a 500-capacity multi-genre music and event building in Bushwick, one of New York’s most vibrant neighborhoods for artists and cultural venues. The project reflects the creative energy of the area while providing a technically advanced, highly flexible performance environment.
Working closely with clients from the DJ and performing arts community, TWA provided comprehensive design and construction support. The preexisting structure was rebuilt with a new structural slab, corrugated metal cladding, and thermal insulation. Special details were developed to prevent condensation and to ensure the mechanical systems could accommodate a full assembly load of 500 occupants. All new MEP systems, coordinated with acoustic and performance requirements, were integrated into the design.
The layout offers versatility: a foyer and café at the front, a performance hall with stage at the rear, and a large sliding gate that connects or separates the spaces. Back-of-house elements include a fully equipped green room with independent access, storage, and service areas. The project was filed as a place of assembly for 500 persons with three means of egress, meeting stringent safety and code requirements.
Performance systems are central to the design. The venue incorporates state-of-the-art sound and light technology, including a Danley sound system, NEC projectors, and ADJ programmable lighting that transform walls, ceiling, and stage into an immersive environment. The space can scale from intimate gatherings of 50 to full-capacity events, supporting a broad range of cultural programming.
Since opening, Silo has become an established cultural venue in Bushwick, reinforcing the neighborhood’s role as a hub of creativity and performance in New York City.
